American Legion State Tournament

By: Austin Alexander-July 30, 2008 Eight of South Carolina’s elite American Legion teams gathered at Legion Field on Wednesday for Day 1 of the 2008 State Tournament. Lead changes and long balls were the theme of the day…but the two top stories from the opener was one player arriving at the ballpark during his game to ignite a victory and the host team rallying from a nine run deficit in the nightcap. Stay tuned to Diamond Prospects as we give you a snapshot from the four contests and provide you prospect info as well… -Game Summaries- Game 1: Irmo 14 Lake City 6 Tyler Martin’s grand slam broke open an early slugfest that saw Gabe Grammer (left), Derek Moses and Thomas McLeod pitch in offensively. WP-Cameron Baker, LP-Christopher Mishoe, HR- Christopher Mishoe (LC), Gabe Grammer (I), Tyler Martin (I). ———————————————— Game 2: Goose Creek 7 Richland 5 Aaron Preston arrived late following summer classes and proceeded to pace Goose Creek with three loud doubles while Ryan Hines silenced Richland bats. WP-Ryan Hines, LP-Joseph Osteen, HR-Chris Daniels (R), Mo Holler (R). ————————————————————- Game 3: Sumter 7 Spartanburg 4 The P-15’s found themselves in an early hole but Samuel Key’s three-run bomb tied the affair and Tony Micklon’s solo job unknotted the affair. Tyler Christman’s gritty, 8+ inning performance kept Post 28 in check for a Sumter win in the opener. WP-Tyler Christman, LP-Sloan Gilliam, SV-Matt Price, HR-Samuel Key (Sumter), Tony Micklon (Sumter), Ross Hanna (Sptg), Brian Poteat (Sptg). ————————————————————- Game 4: Florence 13 Greenwood 11 Once down by nine runs, Florence trailed 11-4 headed into the home half of the 7th before erupting for nine scores, sparked by Tyler Boyd’s bases-clearing double. WP-Thomas Long, LP-Christian Brown, SV-Patrick Mincey (right), HR: Spencer Jordan (F), Keith Branco (F), Drew Willingham (G). Prospect Info: Irmo Gabe Grammer-2008, Irmo HS, INF, Presbyterian signee: Grammer’s note-worthy 2008 continued when he dropped his 16th bomb of the year early in Wednesday’s opening game. Following a strong campaign in the spring, the right-handed hitter’s assault on South Carolina pitchers continues as he has vaulted his stock into a distinct "pro-follow" status in the past six months. Formerly a hard groundball/line-drive hitter with doubles pop to the opposite gap, Grammer has discovered the art of centering baseballs with backspin and has turned into a power threat. Playing shortstop for this legion team, he is a plus defender at the hot corner with plenty of arm strength to remain on the left side of the infield. Derek Moses-2008, Dutch Fork HS, C, Erskine signee: The dirtiest uniform following Wednesday’s games also swung one of the days most potent bats. Moses’ (left) approach at the plate was gap-to-gap, but because he was pitched on the outer third, Moses made good use of the left-centerfield jet-stream at Legion Field. Moses, a left-handed hitter, spoiled two quality pitcher’s pitches to the opposite gap. Moses may want extreme success as bad as any other player in the graduated class. Thomas McLeod-2007, Chapin HS, LHP/OF: McLeod showcased a flat, sweeping swing that stayed in the zone while raking line drives through the right-side but appeared a tad uncomfortable tracking flyballs. Cameron Baker-2008, Chapin HS, RHP: Baker shook off a rough start out of the gate, then settled in with a low-80’s fastball to send the Irmo club into the winner’s bracket. Notables: Tyler Martin (2009, Dutch Fork HS, OF/RHP), Chad Balderman (2009, Dutch Fork HS, RHP), Josh Miller (2009, Chapin HS, INF). Prospect Info: Lake City Shon Carson-2011, Lake City HS, OF: The young phenom put his talents on display Wednesday. The kid can absolutely float around the bases, whether it be on a bunt (3.88), stealing bases with ease or motoring in from second base on a single. His speed is game-altering. Carson (left) wastes no time at the plate getting to work, he saw a grand total of three pitches in his first three plate appearances, all base hits. Carson patrolled centerfield on Wednesday and has the wheels to track down balls, though more live reads out there will improve his instincts and routes to the ball. Carson is the top player the Class of 2011 and is beginning to attract the eyes of professional scouts. Notables: Reggie Weatherford (2009, Lake City HS, INF), Christopher Mishoe (2007, Carolina Academy, RHP), Ryan Fedkenhauer (2008, Lake City HS, RHP). Prospect Info: Goose Creek Aaron Preston-2008, Stratford HS, OF, Presbyterian signee: Preston rolled into Legion Field during the third inning of Goose Creek’s Round 1 game. He’d taken summer school classes earlier in the day, raced to Florence, got dressed, loosened his arm and was immediately inserted into the line-up. And the timing could not have been better. Preston (right) promptly doubled down the line and twice to left-center, he also started a double play of a fly ball to his position in center. Preston has a very sturdy frame, with a compact and flat stroke. The ball explodes off of his bat in a different manner than most high school players and just hits a higher gear as it approaches the outfield. Preston is a solid runner with an above average arm and should slot nicely as an offensive rightfielder at PC. Good player with the potential to play professionally one day. Kenny Bryant-2008, Goose Creek HS, OF, Presbyterian signee: Bryant’s (left) swing is something you may see in a minor league baseball game with an offensive approach that some people could use the expression that he resembles a "professional hitter". His barrel stays through the flight of the pitch and his fly balls have "carry". Bryant is a big, strong presence in the left-handed batters box with plenty of upside to have success versus Division I pitching next spring. Brent Perry-2008, Goose Creek HS, INF/RHP, USC Sumter signee: Perry is a very good athlete that appears more than serviceable at three infield positions and may be just as valuable on the bump. Perry is a sure-handed glove man with plenty of arm strength. He …

Easton Summer Sizzler

By: Will Cheatham-July 20, 2008 SC Bombers, Summerville Hawks, Palmetto Crushers square-off Diamond Prospects was at White Knoll High School in Lexington for a Sunday round robin tournament against three 16U teams from around the state in the Easton Summer Sizzler. The SC Bombers are a team built of guys from the Aiken area. The Palmetto Crushers were a local team from the Columbia area. Summerville was also represented with the Hawks. There was a slight cloud cover, which kept the heat away for much of the day and made for some great baseball weather. In Game 1 the SC Bombers would match up against the Palmetto Crushers. The Bombers sent Auston Peel to the mound. The Crushers countered Peel with a side-arm slinger in Cody Mincey. Peel would ease through the first with no hits allowed. In the bottom half of the inning the Bombers gave him some run support off the bat of Andrew Faulkner of South Aiken who lined a ball into left for an RBI single. The Crushers would jump back on top in the 2nd when Tyler Asbill was walked and moved around the bases and came in to score on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Kyle Inabinet hit into a fielders choice to plate the second run of the inning. In the bottom half, Mincey would settle in.  He struck out the first two batters of the inning, hit the third batter and then got the fourth batter to fly out to right. The Crushers continued to pound the baseball as they tacked on three more runs off a line shot homerun off the bat of Charlie Sowell, a senior from Dutch Fork. Mincey continued to control the bats of the Bombers as he went up and down in the bottom of the 3rd. In the 4th, the teams would trade single runs. Corey Weeks drove in a run for the Bombers, and Derrick Evans did the same for the Crushers. The Bombers would scratch one more run on the board with an RBI single by Jamie Randall that plated Faulkner who doubled in the inning. The Crushers added on some more run support for Mincey in the next two frames with a two-out single by Mincey to drive in two runs in the 5th. Sowell would strike again in the 6th with a big double to drive in two more runs. Douglas Pender would follow with a single to drive in Sowell. This game came down to the pitching performance of Mincey. He had a two different arm angles where he could throw three pitches for strikes. The Bombers did a great job putting the ball in play but could never hit the ball hard on the barrel. They would get a second chance to make a run at the Championship in Game 2. Palmetto Crushers 11 SC Bombers 3 WP-Cody Mincey, LP-Auston Peel, HR-Charlie Sowell (PC) Prospect Info: Palmetto Crushers Cody Mincey-RHP, 2011, Hartsville HS: Mincey was the bright spot for the Crushers this morning. He had a delivery that would resemble a swivel. He twisted back around and unwrapped and came from the side with a fastball that was moving all over the zone. When he stayed over the top, he had better command of his off-speed pitches. If he got ahead of the hitter, you could bet that you would see the side-armed delivery and it continued to get batters out. A slim figure and good height on this young kid will be a big asset to him in years to come. Grant Davidson-Catcher: Davidson did a great job for the Crushers behind the dish. With Mincey having a different type of delivery, he kept most of the balls in front of him and had great hands receiving the baseball. Sometimes you see young guys struggle with pitchers that have a lot of movement, but this was not the case today. Notables: Charlie Sowell, Derrick Evans Prospect Info: SC Bombers Auston Peel-P, Milan, GA: Peel started on the mound for the Bombers this morning. He kept the ball off the barrels the first few innings. I was really impressed with his ability to throw strikes. This is something that you preach as a pitching coach. Sometimes hitters will win the battle like they did in this case, but Peel never hurt himself by giving up free bases. Cody Carol-Catcher: If you could give this guy a nickname it would be Charlie Hustle. He had great energy throughout the game. These two teams had faced off in previous tournaments and I gathered that they had a little history. He played hard every pitch and did a great job blocking balls in the dirt. He had good arm strength down to second but struggled a little with his footwork. With some time working on this, it will really bring his pop times down into the low 2.10’s. He averaged around a 2.25-2.35. Notables: JR Holmes, Jamie Randall ————————————————————– Game 2 Diamond Prospects was on hand for Game 2 at White Knoll High School to see the SC Bombers complete their doubleheader against the Summerville Hawks. The Bombers, coming off a big loss against the Palmetto Crushers, had a lot to prove while the Hawks were finishing up their summer season and trying to go out a good note. The Bombers would send their ace Andrew Faulkner of South Aiken to the mound to face off against Dustin Brodie of the Hawks. Faulkner is a soft crafty lefty that used command and movement of his pitches to run through the Hawks lineup. Brodie was a bigger kid that had a sharp hook, but struggled early in the game with his command. The Bombers got things going early with a one out double by JR Holmes who was starting behind the plate in this game. In the bottom half, Faulkner struck out the first two batters of the inning, but would then give up a double to Gabe Craven and an RBI triple …

Firecracker Classic

By: Austin Alexander-June 26-27, 2008 Diamond Prospects made the rounds in Myrtle Beach on Thursday and Friday to check on some in-state talent on display at the Firecracker Classic hosted by Coastal Carolina. Today, DP breaks down a few of the top performers on the mound, at the plate and in the field. Gaither Bumgardner-2009, Great Falls HS, RHP: The slender righty sat at 84-85 on Thursday with a hard slurve at times that registered in the mid-70’s. Bumgardner is a three-sport standout at 1A Great Falls and the 6’6" two-way player is a very good athlete. He has clearly made some strides on the mound since my last viewing of him in January. Still a little crude, Bumgardner exhibits a high up-side, not just because of his height but more so when you take into account his arm speed and lack of time on the baseball field. His footwork is very quick on picks and he bounced well off the mound on a well-placed swinging bunt on the right-side of the infield. Bumgardner also turned at 4.56 on his single through the left-side. Definite follow for college guys this summer because it will be difficult to get another glimpse of him if you miss him before football season. Ben Carlson-2009, Mauldin HS, RHP: A very long-bodied, broad-shouldered, quality athlete that is not as much of a secret. Carlson (right) pitched between 84-87 on Thursday with a straight fastball and inconsistent curveball. When Carlson brings the breaking ball with him, it shows flashes of an above average college second pitch. Carlson has a very high ceiling and will likely be gobbled up in the Early Signing Period. Pat Dolan-2008, Summerville HS, UTL, RHP: Perhaps the most under-rated graduated player when you talk to coaches. Dolan (left) has tools, high-energy and a frame that will handle college weight well. He put a charge into one on Thursday and shows every single pre-sign of success at Charleston Southern, potentially as a two-way guy. Blake Gruel-2009, Beaufort HS, 3B: A prep shortstop, Gruel (right) seems to have found a home at the hot corner or behind the plate during summer ball. Not a plus runner by any means but he is athletic and has shown some versatility around the infield defensively. His calling card may be a flat swing that has shown the ability to punish mistakes, as evidenced by his bomb to left-centerfield on Friday at Coastal Carolina. Zac Fuesser-2008, York HS, LHP/1B: It was Fuesser’s left arm that landed him as a 19th rounder in the June draft to the Braves but if he ends up at school, his bat will make some noise among the JC ranks. His offensive numbers in high school were gaudy and he showed why when he took a few swats at marginal pitching on Friday. Fuesser has a clue at the plate and exhibits some juice. Christian Dickson-2008, Buford HS, RHP: Dickson sat on 86 MPH from a high slot and featured a quality curveball. Dickson posted big numbers at a small high school but it appears that his overall stuff may be good enough to log innings next spring at SMC. Adam Matthews-2008, White Knoll HS, OF: Matthews’ (left) bat failed him during Friday’s viewing but you can see how he also changes games with his feet and arm. Obviously he posts strong running times but he is a very smooth runner too. He glides around the bases and to fly balls, he has what is referred to functional baseball speed (as opposed to racing speed). The one area that his tool must improve in before USC is with the short game. That caliber of runner could bunt .600 or better just by putting the ball on the ground and taking off for first base. Darien Campbell-2008, Colleton Co. HS, UTL: Campbell is a very "handsy" hitter spraying the ball all over the field, depending on where it is pitched. Campbell has committed to Savannah State and projects to be a quality handler of the bat atop the line-up or as an 8, 9-hole type.
