By: Nick Nickles-February 16, 2008 DP was in Simpsonville Saturday to run a scout day with the Riverside, Laurens and host Hillcrest before they would match up in a three-way scrimmage. One thing for fact is the Riverside Warriors (left, Chris Bates) put on an absolute display of dominance in the showcase part of the day and then where it matters most, on the baseball field against their oppenents. Laurens and Hillcrest had their bright spots as well, and Hillcrest particularly showed that its program still has plenty of pride and talent remaining. The crew from Laurens came into town with the flu and injury bug nagging at their talented club, but Coach Dale Nelson isn’t going to make any excuses for his club’s lackluster performance on the day. Laurens will get back to the work on Monday and get their attitudes refocused on defending their Region Championship. Tall, sub-7.0 runner, good arm from the OF, and makes it look easy in center. Oh yea he can hit. 3 hits from the left-side and swiped a bag today.    3  Matt Pegler Jr  Didnt pitch today, but he hit a towering HR over the scoreboard in left. An experienced veteran on a great team.      4  Will Owens Sr  Gets it going for the Warriors. A great baserunner and top-notch defensive infielder. Fights at the plate and stays on base.    5  Rob Kish Sr  Moves the ball in and out and throws lots of strikes while mixing it up. Dependable and efficient. A low to mid-80’s guy who can pitch.   6 Kevin Cantrell  Jr  Has a good arm. Consistently a mid-80’s guy. Needs to pitch a little more and work ahead in counts, but ability and size are already present.    7  Matt Reeves So  Didn’t have it all working on the hill today, but at 6’2" with a hammer makes him projectable. A jump away from being a force.    8  Chipper Daniels Sr  Kid can straight flash leather. Makes a great play every viewing. Top of his class defensively.    9  Wil Leathers So  Not his best day offensivley. Is going to be a good player for the Warriors  10 Nate Cook  Sr  Did a good job behind the plate and collected a couple of hits on the day.  Chris Bates and the Riverside Warriors put on a baseball clinic in the pro workout and then dominated two quality teams in a three-way scrimmage. Now, DP will give you detailed prospect reports for our readers. We will start with the most impressive team on the day, the Riverside Warriors. The Warriors shut out Laurens jumping out to an early 6-0 lead and proceded to jump on Hillcrest 9-0 before Hillcrest would tack on a few runs late in the ballgame. In the other game, Hillcrest defeated Laurens 6-1 gathering ten hits in five innings.  Prospect Info: Riverside Warriors Michael Roth-Senior, USC signee, P/1B/OF: Every so often a player comes along that is very talented and it’s combined with a deadly focus that only wants to destroy the opposition to win. Roth (right) was like a machine on Saturday. He would walk stoically to the plate with his head down in total concentration, step in the box, look at the pitcher and square up baseballs. He was 5-for-6 in two games with the only out being made on a fastball that he nearly missed driving out of the park, sending a fly ball into the stratosphere to deep right. It is very clear he plans to lead his team to another state championship before he graduates.  On the bump, it was more of the same mentality. He threw his fastball at the knees on the outside corner complimenting it with a change-piece that resulted in numerous 4-3 groundouts. Roth worked three quick, scoreless innings surrendering one weak hit. He made it a pleasure to watch baseball Saturday. Leaves it on the field.   4  Allen Staton  Fr   Has the hands and arm to play the infield now, good swing at the plate. Just needs more playing experience for the youngster.    5  Kyle Waters   Sr   A good receiver, a contact hitter with a backside approach.    6  Kyle Blocker  Jr   Has improved, and will need to continue to do so to lock down third for the Raiders   7  Will Atkinson  Fr   Found ways on base, and collected one of the few hits for the Raiders on the day.    8  Mark Johnson  Sr   The tall lefty didn’t pitch today, but surprisingly he is not an automatic out at the plate. Started at 1st base and had quality at-bats. Prospect Info: Laurens Raiders Travis Burnside-Junior, OF/RHP: He was one of the few Raiders that showed up Saturday and collected a couple of hits. He was not feeling 100 percent recovering from the flu, but still was noticeable. His outfield arm and prowess is comparable to former Woodruff, and USC product, Marcus McBeth. Will Atkinson-Freshman, OF: Atkinson found himself on base a couple of times and got the only other hit for the Raiders on the day, and scored the lone run. The freshman is worth mention and deserves a ‘follow’ status. .

Makes routine plays at short.  7  Trey Tuten  Jr  Crafty lefty; when he’s mixing it up and ahead, he’s at his best.  8  Keith Orr  Jr   Contact/ line drive hitter.   Prospect Info: Hillcrest Rams Ben Pinckney-Unsigned senior, OF: Led off both games reaching base via a double and walk. He is a tough out at the plate and gives the Rams a quality lead-off man. He was slowed by an injury in his throwing arm and we didn’t get to view his arm strength from the OF. A low 7.0’s runner and a solid stick should garner him some interest among some schools. John Ware-Unsigned senior, P/OF: He is an upper-70’s right-handed pitcher that topped out at 80, but he kept getting outs and kept hitters in check at the plate. Ware pitched it a little bit on Saturday. He has some late glove-side sinking action on his fastball that resembles a power pitchers slide piece. He slices the zone with a good spinner in the mid to upper-60’s that kept the Laurens hitters off balance all day. He’s not going to dominate a team, but he can definitely keep his team in the ballgame as he did on this day. Steven Brooks-Unsigned senior, C: When playing Hillcrest, teams should pick their spots when to run, or Brooks will shoot you down. Coaches that emphasize pitching and defense at the next level should jump all over this unsigned senior. He is not anemic with a stick, but he his major strength is in his catching and throwing abilities. He will throw you some 1.9’s down to second. Dominique Anderson-Junior, OF: He couldn’t swing the bat today because of hand injury, but he could run and throw. Anderson’s arm from the outfield has improved and he was up to 83 on the bump. Anderson has good athleticism and has been working at switch-hitting with a little success from a previous viewing. Anderson is a guy to watch through the summer. Zach McAllister-Sophomore, OF/P: A nice looking young player and the coaches at Hillcrest are excited about his future for the Rams. A left-handed hitting outfielder that needs to get better quickly in a stout conference to help his team compete. He got on the bump and was 80-81, and is projectable with a long, lean frame and plenty of room to add weight. McAllister deserves a ‘follow’ status. .

Pickens head coach Stan Butler’s Blue Flame joined the scout day upon arrival and with the help of the coaches we completed the workout in less than 30 minutes!!! Then, both teams jumped right into the scrimmage, and with both teams being known for stout high school offenses, they didn’t disappoint. Nearly 20 runs were scored in this 8-inning affair and DP stuck around to bring you detailed prospect information on two quality baseball teams. Prospect Info: Pickens Logan Thomas-Sophomore, INF/RHP: Displays a cannon arm across the infield when he scoops up a ball at short. A young exciting high school player that is fun to watch play the game. Thomas (right) is a special player, having played on the varsity since he was in the seventh grade. Thomas would benefit by showing more consistency at the plate. Thomas has the ability to be an all-state performer and should contend for Region Player of the Year with a solid campaign at the plate and on the bump. A definite prospect in the 2010 class. Stephen Wyatt-Unsigned senior, OF: We do know that he can hit a legit fastball. In our last viewing of Pickens last year during the upper state playoff round versus A.C. Flora, he took Logan Munson out to centerfield and also recorded three hits on the day. On his first day out from basketball, he started right where he left off, grabbing two hits. The ball comes of his bat nicely and he just finds a way to hit. Hanna Brooks Hall-Junior, INF/RHP: Hall (left) is a quality player in the making. He’s still filling out his tall frame, but the ability is starting to shine through on the diamond. Hall had three hits on the night including a deep bomb to left. He’s a bonafide Division I prospect with projectable size, can swing it and has a plus arm. Hall is a definite guy to watch over the next year, a two-way guy where size and an upper-80’s fastball could eventually take the bat out of his hands, but at this point Hall’s bat is ahead of his arm. John Long-Senior, Liberty signee, 3B/RHP: Long is a toolsy player. Long has a stout frame with some punch in his bat, a plus arm across the diamond and is a solid runner for a corner infield spot. If Long can find balls on the sweet spot of his bat consistently, he could be some kind of force at the next level. Jim Toman and the Liberty staff definitely have something to work with in Long’s abilities. Long will have some gaudy junior numbers to replicate this season for the Yellow Jackets. Grayson Brewster-Unsigned senior, P: A taller kid in the 6’2" range with long arms and a fastball in the low-80’s. He could be coached up a little and has some things to work with. He could pay dividends as a project. He was 80-81 and 69-70 with his curveball that had some loop. An interesting guy for Division II schools looking to acquire some depth on the mound. Jaren Sustar-Junior, 3B: A solid high school infielder with a nose for a line drive a game. He produces a lot of hard groundballs and line drives in a contact-type approach at the plate. He should have plenty of chances to drive in runs batting behind Hall and Long in the order this season for Hanna. Jake Long-Sophomore, RHP/INF: Long has some arm strength and the ball comes out of his hand nicely on the bump. He needs to challenge hitters more frequently and get his breaking pitch over for a strike. He caused some of his own problems on this night by not throwing enough strikes, and he really didn’t get hit. He has good stuff and his breaking pitch is legit for a sophomore. He has to grow up in a hurry because he has an opportunity to help this staff if he finds the zone on a consistent basis. Ross Jackson-Senior, Presbyterian signee, OF: He is a solid role player who doesn’t do anything great, but doesn’t do anything to hurt the team. Every baseball team that is going to be successful needs a player like Jackson.
