Recap: Dixie Hornets at Palmetto Mustangs

By: Nick Nickles-February 12, 2008 DP caught up with the Palmetto Mustangs and the Dixie Hornets on a chilly day in Anderson County. The young Mustangs displayed a team full of youth and even an eighth grader that started the game. Senior Devan Rainey took the ball for the Palmetto and Dixie countered with Senior Shirley. Proper Scrimmage Attire

By: Austin Alexander-February 13, 2008 Ok, so your coach didn’t issue you or your teammates a baseball uniform for tonight’s scrimmage. Well, that’s understandable and acceptable because he is probably trying to preserve the few uniforms he was able to stockpile due to an inferior budget. So, now you have to select what you’ll dress out in, where should you go from here?  Now that I’ve attended my share of pre-season scrimmages, allow me to advise you on some things to consider before you cross the white lines, whether you think a scout will be present or not: -If you own baseball pants, wear them. Sweat pants and wind suits should be a distant second and third option. -If you own spikes, wear them. Airwalks won’t get you from home to first nearly as fast. -Tuck your shirt in, period. -Do not wear a tight Under Armour shirt…without a shirt over it. The skin-tight fit is not always endearing on a 16-year old body. Don’t think that your frame resembles those in the commercials. -Wear a belt. -Teenager’s wearing a Big Johnson, a Corona or a Boar’s Head Tavern t-shirt do not impress adults. -Don’t sport a watch on the field, chances are the clock is ticking on the career of a kid keeping track of how long he is out there. -Don’t wear cut-off sleeves. -Camouflage hats with fish hooks on the bill have no place on a diamond. You are hunting a baseball scholarship, not deer or big-mouth bass. -Don’t hit in jackets or pitch in hooded sweatshirts. -Wear socks or stirrups, not footies with your pants pulled up. Shins and calves are never meant to be seen on a baseball field. Plus it’s probably cold! -Locate a baseball shirt in your wardrobe and wear it. Preferably in your team’s colors. If your mascot is red and blue, it just looks awkward to see the shortstop wearing an orange shirt next to the third baseman who is decked out in Kelly green. Maybe your response is this: Albert Pujols wears cut-off sleeves, Ken Griffey, Jr. turns his hat around backwards and Manny Ramirez carries a water bottle in his back pocket, so why should I be any different? Here’s your answer: You are not Albert Pujols, Ken Griffey, Jr. or Manny Ramirez. Pujols has pipes, Griffey has 500+ homers and Ramirez drives in 125 runs against Major League pitching year after year after year. They have accomplished something in baseball, which gives them a little more leeway in regards to their attire. While evaluator’s jobs are made much easier with numbered uni’s, it becomes appalling to view how over half of high school baseball players treat a night at the yard. It should make no difference whether the contest counts in the standings at all. Have respect for the game, your teammates, your coach, your family and yourself. To put it simply, those who dress like a ballplayer, walk like a ballplayer and act like a ballplayer are normally the ones you read about on this website and will for year’s to come. .

Scout Day: St. James Sharks

By: Austin Alexander-February 12, 2008 St. James skipper Robbie Centracchio opened his gates to Diamond Prospects on a windy Tuesday for their Scout Day and scrimmage. While the trip to Murrells Inlet was prompted by the urge to view a junior southpaw, we uncovered some young players to follow in the process.   Before I even made my first stride toward the Sharks well-maintained playing surface, I was greeted by St. James senior Tim Corbin in the parking lot, a senior left-handed pitcher that has signed with Presbyterian. Fortunately for him, his basketball team was headed out of town for a First Round Playoff match-up with Darlington. Unfortunately for DP, we would not see him take the hill on this night. But we didn’t come away empty handed…   The Sharks were hosting Andrews High School, which pitted two teams reeling from the loss of quality players a year ago. And then the run-fest was on! Walks, misplays, wild pitches and swirling winds made for an interesting evening for both clubs, as a typical February scrimmage became a race to beat the incoming rain.   Fast-forward to the reason for the trip, Kelly Wright. He took infield and threw with grace, pitched one inning and yanked a hamstring coming out of the box in his next at bat.  60 Times    Name  Class  60 Time  David Aldridge  Sr  7.46  Derrick Amann  Sr  7.81  Ingram Bell  Sr  7.07  David Causey  Sr  7.91  Kelly Wright  Jr  7.28  Tim McGraw  Jr  9.09  Tyler Servant  Jr  8.22  Ryan Ziegler  Jr  7.59  Brunson Miller  Jr  7.13  Nick Hotzelt  So  7.90  Colby Crooks  So  7.75  Gunnar Heidt  Fr  7.62  Robert Toriano  Fr  8.35  Tanner English  Fr  7.62  Anthony Cossentino  Fr  7.85   Catchers-Pop Time    Name  Class  Pop Time  Ryan Ziegler  Jr  2.12-2.17   Top Outfield Arms   Rank  Name  Class  1  Derrick Amann  Sr  2  Tanner English  Fr  T3  David Aldridge  Sr  T3  Brunson Miller  Jr   Top Infield Arms   Rank  Name  Class  1  Kelly Wright-1B  Jr  2  Colby Crooks  So  3  Gunnar Heidt  Fr  T4  Robert Toriano  Fr  T4  Anthony Cossentino  Fr   Top Infield Actions   Rank  Name  Class  1  Gunnar Heidt  Fr  2  Robert Toriano  Fr  3  Colby Crooks  Fr Pitchers  Name  Class  R/L  FB  BB  CH  David Aldridge  Sr  R  80-81  –  66-67   Derrick Amann  Sr  R  75-79  –  65-66  Kelly Wright  Jr  L  82-83  –  74-75  Anthony Cossentino  Fr  R  74-75  –  61-63 Top Prospects    Rank  Name  Class  Scout Notes  1  Kelly Wright  Jr  Very loose and projectable arm and frame; definite follow in 09 class; plus defender at 1B but future is as a LHP  2  Tanner English  Fr  Stong arm, solid runner and good bat-speed with plenty of physical maturing to come  3  Ryan Ziegler  Jr  Solid arm strength and very accurate behind the dish with every throw; defensive skills are ahead of bat but has passion to play the game  4  David Aldridge  Sr  Another energized and passionate player with some two-way skills at the right school; can play past HS  T5  Gunnar Heidt  Fr  Good swing and likely starter at SS; when he gets stronger, will project better as a 3B  T5  Anthony Cossentino  Fr  Potential two-way player with some arm strength and pop in his bat .

Scout Day 2008: Pickens Blue Flame

By: Nick Nickles-February 11, 2008 First year T.L. Hanna Head Coach Mark Crook brought in DP to run the Yellow Jackets through a DP scout day before a home contest with the Pickens Blue Flame. Pickens head coach Stan Butler’s Blue Flame joined the scout day upon arrival and with the help of the coaches we completed the workout in less than 30 minutes!!! Then, both teams jumped right into the scrimmage, and with both teams being known for stout high school offenses, they didn’t disappoint. Nearly 20 runs were scored in this 8-inning affair and DP stuck around to bring you detailed prospect information on two quality baseball teams. Prospect Info: Pickens Logan Thomas-Sophomore, INF/RHP: Displays a cannon arm across the infield when he scoops up a ball at short. A young exciting high school player that is fun to watch play the game. Thomas (right) is a special player, having played on the varsity since he was in the seventh grade. Thomas would benefit by showing more consistency at the plate. Thomas has the ability to be an all-state performer and should contend for Region Player of the Year with a solid campaign at the plate and on the bump. A definite prospect in the 2010 class. Stephen Wyatt-Unsigned senior, OF: We do know that he can hit a legit fastball. In our last viewing of Pickens last year during the upper state playoff round versus A.C. Flora, he took Logan Munson out to centerfield and also recorded three hits on the day. On his first day out from basketball, he started right where he left off, grabbing two hits. The ball comes of his bat nicely and he just finds a way to hit. All indications are that Wyatt has good grades and a 20+ ACT score.   60 Times  Name  Class  60  Jut Owens  Sr  7.59  Blake Ellenburg  Jr  7.89  Josh Crumpton  Sr  8.46  Tyler Dacus  Sr  8.49  Kendal Ray  Jr  7.28  Brett Finley  Jr  7.66  Logan Thomas  So  7.37  Clay Winstead  Sr  8.69   Reed Kent  Sr  7.45  Will Burgess  Jr  7.62  Cody Bowen  Sr  8.10  Josh Moses  Sr  8.06  Carlin Grant  Jr  7.82  Rae Brazeale  Jr  7.68  Stephen Wyatt  Sr  7.25  Doug Atkins  Jr  7.72  Jacob Batson  Jr  7.97  Jacob Fowler  Jr  7.44  Brandon Looper  Jr  8.10  Aaron Hester  Jr  7.50 Best Outfield Arms  Rank Name Class   1  Jordan Smith   Sr  2  Doug Atkins  Jr  3  Stephen Wyatt  Sr  4  Jacob Fowler  Jr  5  Josh Moses  Sr Best Infield Actions  Rank  Name  Class  1  Logan Thomas  So  2  Kendall Ray  Jr  T3  Will Burgess  Jr  T3  Reed Kent  Sr  5  Clay Winstead  Sr Best Infield Arms  Rank Name Class   1 Logan Thomas   So  2 Kendall Ray   Jr  3 Reed Kent   Sr   4 Will Burgess   Jr  5 Clay Winstead   Sr Catchers Pop Times  Name  Time  Class  Jut Owens  2.15-2.22  Sr  Blake Ellenburg  2.19-2.28  Jr  Pitchers  Name  Class  Fastball  Curveball   Change  Rae Brazeale  Jr  70-73 was effective when down in the zone  56-59  None  Jacob Batson  Jr  74-75 found the middle of the plate too often  65-67  None  Jake Fowler  Jr  78-79  64-67  None  Logan Thomas  So  84-87 has some life, misses bats  70-71 plus breaking pitch at times  None Top Prospects   Rank  Name  Class  Notes  1  Logan Thomas  So  Easy to think he has the best infield arm in the state. Can he play up to his potential and when will that happen? That is the question. It was there tonight.   2  Stephen Wyatt  Sr   Ball comes of his bat good. Has some power. First day out of basketball, gets two hits.  3  Kendall Ray  Jr  A good little player who plays with some guts. Scrappy  4  Doug Atkins  Jr  A country strong boy with a good arm. Very raw  5  Josh Moses  Sr  Got a little power. Has to find a position  6  Jacob Batson  Jr  Scrappy hitter at the plate.  7  Josh Crumpton  Sr   Good looking body, when he runs into the baseball it travels.   .

Scout Day 2008: T.L. Hanna Yellow Jackets

Prospect Info: T.L. Hanna Brooks Hall-Junior, INF/RHP: Hall (left) is a quality player in the making. He’s still filling out his tall frame, but the ability is starting to shine through on the diamond. Hall had three hits on the night including a deep bomb to left. He’s a bonafide Division I prospect with projectable size, can swing it and has a plus arm. Hall is a definite guy to watch over the next year, a two-way guy where size and an upper-80’s fastball could eventually take the bat out of his hands, but at this point Hall’s bat is ahead of his arm. John Long-Senior, Liberty signee, 3B/RHP: Long is a toolsy player. Long has a stout frame with some punch in his bat, a plus arm across the diamond and is a solid runner for a corner infield spot. If Long can find balls on the sweet spot of his bat consistently, he could be some kind of force at the next level. Jim Toman and the Liberty staff definitely have something to work with in Long’s abilities. Long will have some gaudy junior numbers to replicate this season for the Yellow Jackets. Grayson Brewster-Unsigned senior, P: A taller kid in the 6’2" range with long arms and a fastball in the low-80’s. He could be coached up a little and has some things to work with. He could pay dividends as a project. He was 80-81 and 69-70 with his curveball that had some loop. An interesting guy for Division II schools looking to acquire some depth on the mound. Jaren Sustar-Junior, 3B: A solid high school infielder with a nose for a line drive a game. He produces a lot of hard groundballs and line drives in a contact-type approach at the plate. He should have plenty of chances to drive in runs batting behind Hall and Long in the order this season for Hanna. Jake Long-Sophomore, RHP/INF: Long has some arm strength and the ball comes out of his hand nicely on the bump. He needs to challenge hitters more frequently and get his breaking pitch over for a strike. He caused some of his own problems on this night by not throwing enough strikes, and he really didn’t get hit. He has good stuff and his breaking pitch is legit for a sophomore. He has to grow up in a hurry because he has an opportunity to help this staff if he finds the zone on a consistent basis. Ross Jackson-Senior, Presbyterian signee, OF: He is a solid role player who doesn’t do anything great, but doesn’t do anything to hurt the team. Every baseball team that is going to be successful needs a player like Jackson. He will do what it takes to win, and gives you a shot in all aspects of the game.    60 Times  Name  Class  60  Grayson Brewster  Sr  7.61  Trevor Burrell  Sr  7.81  Garrett Burton  Sr  7.35  Griff Caroseillo  Jr  8.06  Russell Davis  Sr  7.53  Michael Grande  Jr  8.46  Brooks Hall  Jr  7.25  Erich Hellstrom  Jr  7.73  Jeremey Hunter  Sr  Did not run  Ross Jackson  Sr  7.32  Jacob Long  So  8.03  John Long  Sr  7.13  Mcclain Murphy  Jr  7.28  Chase Page  Sr  7.56  Brad Parkins  Sr  7.75  Chase Richey  Jr  Did not run  Dillon Sloan  Jr  7.66  Jaren Sustar  Jr  7.43  Clay Tucker  Jr  7.09 Best OF Arms  Rank  Name  Class  1  Ross Jackson  Sr  2  Russell Davis  Sr  3  Clay Tucker  Jr  4  Dillon Sloan  Jr  5  McClain Murphy  Jr  Best infield Actions  Rank  Name  Class  T1  John Long  Sr  T1  Jaren Sustar  Jr  T3  Jake Long   So  T3  Jeremy Hunter  Sr  5  Garret Burton  Sr Best Infield Arms  Rank  Name  Class  1   John Long   Sr  2  Jaren Sustar  Jr  3  Jake Long  So  4  Jeremey Hunter   Sr  5  Garret Burton  Sr Catcher Pop Time  Name  POP Time  Class  Brad Parkins  2.22-2.25  Sr   Pitchers  Name  Class  Fastball  Curveball  Change  Michael Grande  Jr  78-79 induced groundballs  66-68 slighty above average high school breaking pitch  –  Jake Long  So  80-81 slides away to righties 68-70 Plus curveball at times   –  Griff Caroseillo  Jr  71-75  58  –  Grayson Brewster  Sr  80-81  69-70  –  John Long  Sr  82-84  72-73 Plus curveball throughout his outing, served as an out pitch.  – Top Propsects  Rank  Name  Class  Notes  T1  John Long  Sr  Good arm, ball jumps off bat.
