Fall League Prospect Info-Upstate: September

By: Nick Nickles – September 30, 2009 Good Players Continue to Emerge in Fall League Action! Over the past week we have continued to work through fall league games to find more and more prospects. One thing is for sure, that guys continue to pop up and some players are simply getting better in league play. Here are some of the players that made the prospect list over the past week with the scoop on their play. -Prospect Info: Wade Hampton- Champ Rowland- Senior, PC commit, SS/RHP: Rowland (left) has very good hands. His actions and arm strength separate him from all the other shortstops in the state at this point. On the bump, Rowland was as dominant as I had ever seen him. Seeing Rowland make around 10 appearances, I had never seen him above 86. He pitched at 87-88 for three innings on this night with a good 12/6 breaking ball at 72-74. His arm is quick and his fastball possessed some occasional arm-side run. If Rowland can carry this over to the high school season… Wade Hampton becomes a serious threat in the 3A Upperstate. Rowland’s hitting has improved, but it is still his other tools that make him a unique player. Rowland was a dominant high school arm on this night. Kyle Martin- Junior, 1B/LHP: Martin (right) has been wearing it out in the past viewings. He crushed a homerun and smashed some singles. Martin has some power and with an unorthodox stance he continues to get the bat head on the baseball. Martin has a chance to be an outstanding baseball player for a school as he further develops. Martin is a high level prospect. Christian Ashford- Unsigned senior, RHP: Ashford was 81-83 tonight. He had a feel for throwing strikes and showed a feel for a change up. Ashford pitched well tonight and should add some depth to the Generals pitching staff this season. Ashford may be able to help some smaller schools and JUCO’s and he could also make another velocity jump by the spring. Brooks Yeager- Sophomore, UTL: Yeager swings the pole a little bit from the left-side. He stays balanced and squares up some baseballs. Yeager has hit the ball well in each viewing dating back to last year when he played Varsity as a freshman. Yeager is a young stick that deserves a "follow tag" at this point in his young career.

Fall League: Airport vs Brookland-Cayce JV

By: David List – September 22, 2009 Airport routes young Bearcat club in DP action Airport starter Zach Sightler came out of the gate with two early K’s in the first inning and he looked to be cruising. The wheels came off though as four BC runs would score on walks issued by the Airport starter. Airport would come back in the second in with a six spot, four of which came on an inside-the-park grand slam by Jeremy Hipp. The Eagles wouldn’t look back as they continued to tack on runs through the six inning, while holding the BC team down. Justin Shannon and Ryan Sturkie also added to the offensive assault with base hits and RBI for Airport.  Final Score: Airport 14 BC (JV) 4 -Prospect Info: Airport- Zach Sightler-2012 INF/RHP: Sightler took to the hill for the Airport team and looked as though he would cruise early on. He has a good pitchers body and his arm speed was very good for a sophomore. It translated well to the radar gun also, as he sat 82 MPH and topped out at 85 MPH. This young man really has a chance to be a top pitcher in the 2012 class, if he can stay consistant mechanically. With a few adjustments, this big right-hander could be able to make an impact at the next level. Preston Whitaker-2013 OF/RHP: Whitaker came in behind Sightler and worked out of the jam. He ran a consistent ball in the zone at 75 MPH and topped out at 78 MPH. This youngster has a good body and he got stronger as he pitched inning to inning. With a little time and work, he could develop into a quality arm. Jeremy Hipp Jr.-2011 OF: This kid runs well and he proved it tonight as he hit a deep gapper in a large park, but legitimately got the inside-the-park grand slam. He is raw from the left-side of the plate, but his hands work.
