dp Lowcountry: Warriors Cardinal vs Stags

By: DeWayne Kitts – October 14, 2021

ProctorJackson stance20The DP fall league kicked off in Moncks Corner at Jim Bradley Field with a contest between the Stags of Berkeley and Warriors of Wando. As the teams prepared to take the field, sounds of whistles filled the evening as the Stags football team practiced immediately behind us.

The Stags dressed in their usual royal blue jerseys and the Warriors in their cardinal jerseys. The game started a few minutes early as everyone was eager to get going when Gavin Driggers from the Stags strolled to mound to throw the first pitch and face Calder Garris (Citadel commit).

The Stags would come out on top this night 7-0.

*For the Fall League, we do not focus on game recaps as the emphasis is the development and evaluation of prospects.

-Prospect Info-

Gavin Driggers – 2023 Berkeley Stags, RHP, Uncommitted: This young man is what coaches dream a pitcher should look like. Tall 6’3” strong frame body with room to continue to fill out, ideal big league body. He works from the first base side of rubber with OH arm slot. Tonight he worked 79-81 (82 MPH) with fastball with late arm-side sink/run down in zone. The slider has good shape that has downer type action 73-75 MPH, mostly to his glove side. Showed 2 changeups at 78 and missed arm-side with both. As an evaluator would like to see him stay taller and get downhill angle versus collapsing on back leg i.e. drop and drive type. The future looks bright for this young man as he continues to develop and get mound time.

Tyler Evans – 2022 Berkeley Stags, RHP/1B, Uncommitted: He is a burly-built kid with strong wrist and forearms with some thunder in his bat. Tonight he started at 1B and batted late in line up. His first AB roped a hard-hit single to LF off a hanging breaking ball and ended tonight 1-for-2 with 2 BB. Later came in and pitched 2 innings with compact delivery and OH slot. First inning was mostly 77-81 and then in second was more 80-83 MPH with a tight top to bottom CB 63-67 that has depth. Threw 1 change at 70 that he dropped his arm slot and missed arm-side.

Jackson “JP” Proctor – 2023 Berkeley Stags, 3B/OF, Clemson Commit: Tonight he started at third base for the first time in his HS career, generally played LF but making the transition. Had a couple balls hit his way and made the plays like he been there forever. The bat is his best quality and tonight did not disappoint. He starts with a slight open stance, high back elbow and a lot of movement in hands with slight gap separating top and bottom hands. On this night he went 2-for-3 with 2 BB, hard hit single between 3.4 hole, then a turned on a pitch for long HR to rightfield that landed in tree way beyond the fence.

Mac Ketchin – 2022, Wando Warriors, RHP/OF, Uncommitted: He started the game on the mound tonight and worked 2 innings. Compact delivery with double tap pivot foot in the windup, comes from OH slot. Quick arm that gets offline in back towards first base but body stays online to the plate. Had the top bolt the night flashing 87 MPH a couple of times, worked mostly 84-85 with some sinking action down in zone. Uses hard CB 72-75 for out pitch that has tight 11/5 tilt and will show change 68-70, occasionally lowers slot. Athletic kid ran 6.81 this summer at Palmetto Games with projectable frame and nice upside. Offensively went 1-for-2 at the plate with hard hit ball in the LC gap.

Ben Bullard – 2022, Wando Warriors, 3B/RHP, College of Charleston commit: Good-looking kid with bat speed that squared up 2 balls on the night in only 2 AB’S. Came in to pitch 2 innings and likes to work to his glove side. FB was 80-83 MPH that he would paint the outside corner with. He showed a CB that had ¾ tilt at 67-70 and a change with late action at 74. Has a compact delivery and takes ball out of glove early and taps prior to pitching.

Jacob Pelbath – 2023, Wando Warrior, Catcher, Uncommitted: Defensively this young man did a tremendous job blocking balls in the dirt to both sides. Showed some arm strength but must get quicker in release, was 2.26 in game. When he comes out of glove takes the ball straight up to high position above head prior to throwing.

-Notables-

Rhett Legette – 2022, Berkeley Stags, RHP/OF, Uncommitted: Squared up 85 MPH FB for long HR to deep LC field.

Gavin Edens – 2024, Berkeley Stags, MIF, Uncommitted: Was 2-5 and showed solid defensive actions.

Bryce Beesho - 2023, Wando Warriors, INF/OF, Uncommitted: Was 2-2 offensively and showed bat control getting on top of FB for hard hit single to LC.

Will Hill – 2022. Wando Warriors, MIF, Uncommitted: Made nice play on ball up the middle and flipped to 2B for force out.
