Scout Day 2008: Blue Ridge Tigers

By: Nicholas Nickles- February 20, 2008 Coach Steve Goodwin invited DP in for a day in early February, but rainy weather interfered with our plans on two occasions, but the third time was a charm for a DP Scout Day with Blue Ridge Tigers. Coach Goodwin has a great mix of traditional values that classic old school coaches (commonly referred to as “old heads”) carry, but also has a modern day perspective of today’s baseball. Goodwin’s players were excited, stretched and ready to go when we arrived at the ballpark. The field was set up for the evaluation, and we simply got started. The Tigers had short haircuts, fresh shaves and they were decked in baseball attire. Coach Goodwin also let it be known that their team cleats have not yet been delivered, and even down to the footwear, would have been in unison on this day if at all possible. Also noteworthy, Coach Goodwin had three types of rosters with all the information that a college coach or scout could possibly utilize without having to inquire. A first class environment nestled in the rural mountains in Northern Greenville County. Here’s how the Tigers graded out by the numbers… 60 Times  Name  Class  60 Time  Cody Vaughn  So  7.60  Chas Goodwin  So  7.99  Coby Adams  Sr  7.41  Dillion Epps  Jr  7.03  Luke Black  So  7.50  Pat Roberson  Sr  7.81  Matt Hughes  Sr  7.53  Chase Corn  So  7.66  Josh Straub  Sr  8.10  Jonah Smith  Sr  8.41  Tyler Clark  Sr  7.53  Ryan Reeve  Jr  8.44  Brandon Wooten  Fr  7.90  Cole Robison  So  7.80  Billy Watson  So  8.25  Peter Kovanda  Sr  6.94  Ricky Young  Sr  7.37  Chas Williams  Sr  8.12  Mac Bragg  Sr  7.71 Catchers-Pop Times  Name  Class  Pop Time  Chas Goodwin  So  2.09-2.12  Matt Hughes  Sr  2.21-2.40  Chas Williams  Fr  2.41-2.47 Top Outfield Arms Rank  Name  Class  1  Luke Black  So  2  Coby Adams  Sr  3  Dillion Epps  Jr  4  Cole Robison  So  5  Cody Vaughn  So Top Infield Arms Rank  Name  Class  1  Luke Black  So  T2  Jonah Smith  Sr  T2  Chase Corn  So  4  Tyler Clark  Sr  5  Dillion Epps  Jr Top Infield Actions Rank  Name  Class  1  Luke Black  So  2  Tyler Clark  Sr  3  Jonah Smith  Sr  4  Brandon Wooten  Fr  5  Chase Corn  So   Pitchers  Name  Class  R/L  FB  BB  CH  Cole Robison  So   L  76-78  58  62  Chase Corn  So  L  77-78 runs away nicely  62-63  65  Coby Adams  Jr  R  78-82  64-66  None   Jonah Smith  Sr  R  76-77  60-63 only pitch that bothered Liberty hitters on the night  69  Josh Straub  Sr  R  68-70  58  None  Billy Watson  Sr  R  66-68  57  None   Top Prospects  Rank  Name  Class  Scout Notes  1  Luke Black  So  Good actions and quick release. Lefty, movement, same as above…  5  Chas Goodwin  So  Broken finger, so he couldn’t play but he did post some 2.1 pop times and showed improved feet work and athleticism behind the dish.  6  Dillon Epps  Jr  A pleasant surprise, 7.0 flat runner with a playable arm from the OF, led game off with a stand up triple.  7  Brandon Wooten  Fr  Will make Blue Ridge have a top-flight infield in a couple of years combining with Black up the middle. Could get it done at short now if needed.  8  Matt Hughes  Sr  Solid, good looking frame. Not bad behind the plate but projects more of a corner INF or LF. Ball comes of the bat ball well. Line-drive hitter   9  Coby Adams  Sr  A decent arm, low-80’s on the bump with a good curveball. Needs to work on control and pitch selection, but has stuff to get outs.  10  Cody Vaughn  So  Good arm from the OF and INF, hasn’t broken the line-up quite yet, but the coaches are very aware of his abilities.   .

Scout Day 2008: Riverside JV’s

By: Nick Nickles- February 19, 2008 Coach Chris Bates opened up the doors for DP to come in check out the talent-rich JVs, or the “farm team” of the powerhouse Riverside Warriors. The program is no stranger to attention as the local news media was also in to get pictures, interviews and a glimpse of the coaches and players in this proven program of champions. The most impressive characteristic of this young JV squad and Varsity team, who were also working out, was their ability to not get distracted. All the players got their work in and nobody missed a beat as players were called for individual photo shots and interviews. It was just another day at practice for the Riverside Warriors. We were not disappointed. The first JV pitcher threw an 83 MPH fastball on the first pitch in the bullpen session. Scout Day 2008: Palmetto Mustangs

By: Nick Nickles-February 17, 2008 Coach Tim Broome invited DP back to Williamston to get in a Scout Day to compliment their scrimmage with the Dixie Hornets last week. The future looks bright at Palmetto with a talented group of 8th graders and freshmen on the way with an already solid class of sophomores, led by the Burton twins, with some Varsity experience on board. The Mustangs have a power source in junior catcher Jeremy Beacham, and should score some runs this season. The Mustangs will rely on a variety of pitchers to limit opposing teams offensively, lacking a true power arm. They look to be a promising young team that should find themselves in the playoffs again in 2008.   60 Times  Name  Class  60 Time  Bryan Meares  Sr  7.72  Mark Cothran  Sr  8.00  Jeremy Beacham  Jr  7.35  Kyle Fricks  Jr  7.37  Shawn Davis  Jr  7.36  Hunter Burton  So  7.01 (Flu)  Heath Burton  So  6.94  Nick Heney  So  8.41  Johnny Wilson  So  8.12  Tyler Knight  So  7.59  Sam Cothran  Fr  7.87  Trey Hayes  8th  7.22  Wayne Parker  8th  8.09  Steven Cooper  8th  7.65  Clay Morgan  8th  7.90  Justin Driver  8th  7.75  Tanner Lollis  7th  8.24 Catchers-Pop Times  Name  Class  Pop Time  Jerremy Beacham Jr  2.12- 2.21   Heath Burton So  2.18-2.22   Nick Heney So  2.21-2.30   Trey Hayes 8th  2.21-2.40   Justin Driver 8th  2.53-2.6  Top Outfield Arms Rank  Name  Class  1  Jeremy Beacham  Jr  2  Heath Burton  So  3  Tyler Knight  So  4  Brandon Rogers  Fr  5  Bryan Meares  Sr Top Infield Arms Rank  Name  Class  1  Hunter Burton   So  2  Mark Cothran  Sr  3  Nick Heney  So  4  Wayne Parker  8th  5  Ty Lollis  So Top Infield Actions Rank  Name  Class  1  Hunter Burton  So  2  Ty Lollis  So  3  Mark Cothran  Sr  4  Nick Heney  So  5  Tanner Lollis  7th   Top BP Round  Rank  Name  Class  1  Hunter Burton  So  2  Steven Cooper  8th  3  Sam Cothran  Fr  4  Jeremy Beacham  Jr  5  Heath Burton  So  6  Trey Hayes  8th  7  Tyler Knight  So  8  Nick Heney  So  9  Bryan Meares  Sr  10  Kyle Fricks  So   Pitchers  Name  Class  R/L  FB  BB  CH  Jeremy Beacham  Jr   R  79-80  70 Slide piece  70  Bryan Meares  Sr  R  74-75  64-65  68  Mark Cothran  Sr  R  77-78  63-65  68  Heath Burton  So  R  75-76  61-64  63-65  Nick Heney  So  R  72  60-64  59-60 arm side action  Tyler Knight  So  R  71-72  59-61  68  Sam Cothran  Fr  R  70-73  61   68  Brandon Rogers  Fr  R  75-76  65-67   71  Trey Hayes  8th  R  76-77  64-65  65  Wayne Paker  8th  R  64-67  61  65  Steven Cooper  8th  R  73-74 Arm side run  61 + curve  64   Top Prospects  Rank  Name  Class  Scout Notes  1  Hunter Burton  So At 5’5 he draws comparisons to former Abbeville and Clemson product Casey Stone with the left-handed stick and plays with country attitude. A sub-7.0 runner and he can square it up. A kid you wanna take to war with you.   2  Jeremy Beacham  Jr An athletic country boy, runs well for a catcher. Good body at 6-2/180 with some power. Has some tools that can be coached.    3  Heath Burton  So  Hits from the right-side, a sub-7.0 runner.    4  Trey Hayes  8th A low-7.0’s runner and upper-70’s already. Could sharpen up his fundamentals over the summer and utilize more technique to be a force the next 4 years for the Mustangs.  5  Steven Cooper  8th His bat is ahead of everything else at this point, but whats wrong with that? He can stroke it from the left-side. Great swing for a youngster   6  Mark Cothran  Sr Plays hard, needs more experience. Projects as a spot relief pitcher.  7  Tyler Knight  So Quick hands at the plate. There are some things to like about him at this point. Will need to continue to improve     8  Sam Cothran  Fr Swings the bat, needs to get strong. Potential is present.   9  Tanner Lollis  7th Fundamentally sound, hes just very little at this point, but plays the right way. Kids grow!!!   10  Ty Lollis  So Older brother of Tanner, great infield actions. Solid at the plate, but its there. Just needs to develop more physically in the next year. .

Scout Day 2008: Riverside Warriors

By: Nick Nickles-February 16, 2008 DP was in Simpsonville Saturday to run a scout day with the Riverside, Laurens and host Hillcrest before they would match up in a three-way scrimmage. One thing for fact is the Riverside Warriors (left, Chris Bates) put on an absolute display of dominance in the showcase part of the day and then where it matters most, on the baseball field against their oppenents. Laurens and Hillcrest had their bright spots as well, and Hillcrest particularly showed that its program still has plenty of pride and talent remaining. The crew from Laurens came into town with the flu and injury bug nagging at their talented club, but Coach Dale Nelson isn’t going to make any excuses for his club’s lackluster performance on the day. Laurens will get back to the work on Monday and get their attitudes refocused on defending their Region Championship. DP will give you all the data as this fun day unfolded at Hillcrest High School. ————————————————– 60 Times  Name  Class  60 Time  Jordan Scott  Soph  6.96  Sam Reese  Sr  No Time  Alex Poag  So  7.06  Blake Tollison  Jr  7.35  Austin Lawrence  So  7.33  Wil Leathers  So  7.06  John Reinholz  Jr  7.38  Will Owens  Sr  7.18  Chipper Daniels  Sr  7.19  Ben Scroggs  Jr  7.60  Blake Howard  Jr  7.62  Rob Kish  Sr  7.47  Michael Roth  Sr  7.34  Matt Reeves  So  7.59  Nate Cook  Sr  7.53  Chase Warren  So  7.72  Daniel Cloy  Jr  No Time  Kevin Cantrell  Jr  7.47  Matthew Pegler  Jr  7.60  Nick Peter  Fr  7.43  Steven Daniels  Jr  No Time  Thomas Spencer  Fr  7.50  Ryan Graham  So  8.25 Catchers-Pop Times  Name  Class  Pop Time  Nate Cook  Sr  2.13-2.19  Kevin Cantrell  Jr  2.12-2.18  Nick Peter  Fr  2.34-2.49  Ryan Graham  Soph  2.21-2.35 Top Outfield Arms Rank  Name  Class  1  Michael Roth  Sr  2  Rob Kish  Sr  T3  Jordan Scott  So  T3  John Rienholz  Jr  T3  Matt Reeves  So Top Infield Arms Rank  Name  Class  1  Michael Roth  Sr  2  Matt Pelger  Jr  3  Will Owens  Sr  4  Chipper Daniels  Sr  5  Will Leathers  So  6  Ben Scroggs  Jr Top Infield Actions Rank  Name  Class  1  Chipper Daniels  Sr  2  Will Owens  Sr  3  Michael Roth  Sr  4  Will Leathers  So  5  Matt Pegler  Jr Pitchers  Name  Class  R/L  FB  BB  CH  Michael Roth Sr  L  80-81 fantastic control  57-58 big slow breaker  71 with sink, gives the middle infielders routine grounders   Kevin Cantrell Jr  R  85-86 Heavy ball, looks harder than what gun displays   68-70 threw it for a strike, good break  71  Matt Reeves So  R  77-81  61-68 nasty breaker, best pitch     Daniel Cloy Jr  R  74-75   61  None  Rob Kish Sr  R  81-84 locates both sides of the plate  65-66 67-68 good action on change piece    Top Prospects  Rank  Name  Class  Scout Notes  1  Michael Roth  Sr   A focused, talented leader spells trouble for Riverside oppenents. Needs to pitch a little more and work ahead in counts, but ability and size are already present.    7  Matt Reeves So  Didn’t have it all working on the hill today, but at 6’2" with a hammer makes him projectable. A jump away from being a force.    8  Chipper Daniels Sr  Kid can straight flash leather. Makes a great play every viewing. Top of his class defensively.    9  Wil Leathers So  Not his best day offensivley. Is going to be a good player for the Warriors  10 Nate Cook  Sr  Did a good job behind the plate and collected a couple of hits on the day.  Chris Bates and the Riverside Warriors put on a baseball clinic in the pro workout and then dominated two quality teams in a three-way scrimmage. Now, DP will give you detailed prospect reports for our readers. We will start with the most impressive team on the day, the Riverside Warriors. The Warriors shut out Laurens jumping out to an early 6-0 lead and proceded to jump on Hillcrest 9-0 before Hillcrest would tack on a few runs late in the ballgame. In the other game, Hillcrest defeated Laurens 6-1 gathering ten hits in five innings.  Prospect Info: Riverside Warriors Michael Roth-Senior, USC signee, P/1B/OF: Every so often a player comes along that is very talented and it’s combined with a deadly focus that only wants to destroy the opposition to win. Roth (right) was like a machine on Saturday. He would walk stoically to the plate with his head down in total concentration, step in the box, look at the pitcher and square up baseballs. He was 5-for-6 in two games with the only out being made on a fastball that he nearly missed driving out of the park, sending a fly ball into the stratosphere to deep right. It is very clear he plans to lead his team to another state championship before he graduates.  On the bump, it was more of the same mentality. He threw his fastball at the knees on the outside corner complimenting it with a change-piece that resulted in numerous 4-3 groundouts. Roth worked three quick, scoreless innings surrendering one weak hit. He made it a pleasure to watch baseball Saturday. Roth should contend, if not be a favorite, for most statewide post-season awards entering the season. Jordan Scott-Sophomore, OF: Bats left and throws right playing the centerfield position. Needs to have a big year for Laurens on the bump.  3  Tori Patterson  So  Can pick it up, made several plays with the glove that were plus plays. 4th year starting on Varsity. Leaves it on the field.   4  Allen Staton  Fr   Has the hands and arm to play the infield now, good swing at the plate. Just needs more playing experience for the youngster.    5  Kyle Waters   Sr   A good receiver, a contact hitter with a backside approach.    6  Kyle Blocker  Jr   Has improved, and will need to continue to do so to lock down third for the Raiders   7  Will Atkinson  Fr   Found ways on base, and collected one of the few hits for the Raiders on the day.    8  Mark Johnson  Sr   The tall lefty didn’t pitch today, but surprisingly he is not an automatic out at the plate. Started at 1st base and had quality at-bats. Prospect Info: Laurens Raiders Travis Burnside-Junior, OF/RHP: He was one of the few Raiders that showed up Saturday and collected a couple of hits. He was not feeling 100 percent recovering from the flu, but still was noticeable. His outfield arm and prowess is comparable to former Woodruff, and USC product, Marcus McBeth. Will Atkinson-Freshman, OF: Atkinson found himself on base a couple of times and got the only other hit for the Raiders on the day, and scored the lone run. The freshman is worth mention and deserves a ‘follow’ status. .

He is a tough out at the plate and gives the Rams a quality lead-off man. He was slowed by an injury in his throwing arm and we didn’t get to view his arm strength from the OF. A low 7.0’s runner and a solid stick should garner him some interest among some schools. John Ware-Unsigned senior, P/OF: He is an upper-70’s right-handed pitcher that topped out at 80, but he kept getting outs and kept hitters in check at the plate. Ware pitched it a little bit on Saturday. He has some late glove-side sinking action on his fastball that resembles a power pitchers slide piece. He slices the zone with a good spinner in the mid to upper-60’s that kept the Laurens hitters off balance all day. He’s not going to dominate a team, but he can definitely keep his team in the ballgame as he did on this day. Steven Brooks-Unsigned senior, C: When playing Hillcrest, teams should pick their spots when to run, or Brooks will shoot you down. Coaches that emphasize pitching and defense at the next level should jump all over this unsigned senior. He is not anemic with a stick, but he his major strength is in his catching and throwing abilities. He will throw you some 1.9’s down to second. Dominique Anderson-Junior, OF: He couldn’t swing the bat today because of hand injury, but he could run and throw. Anderson’s arm from the outfield has improved and he was up to 83 on the bump. Anderson has good athleticism and has been working at switch-hitting with a little success from a previous viewing. Anderson is a guy to watch through the summer. Zach McAllister-Sophomore, OF/P: A nice looking young player and the coaches at Hillcrest are excited about his future for the Rams. A left-handed hitting outfielder that needs to get better quickly in a stout conference to help his team compete. He got on the bump and was 80-81, and is projectable with a long, lean frame and plenty of room to add weight. McAllister deserves a ‘follow’ status. .

Scout Day: St. James Sharks

By: Austin Alexander-February 12, 2008 St. James skipper Robbie Centracchio opened his gates to Diamond Prospects on a windy Tuesday for their Scout Day and scrimmage. While the trip to Murrells Inlet was prompted by the urge to view a junior southpaw, we uncovered some young players to follow in the process.   Before I even made my first stride toward the Sharks well-maintained playing surface, I was greeted by St. James senior Tim Corbin in the parking lot, a senior left-handed pitcher that has signed with Presbyterian. Fortunately for him, his basketball team was headed out of town for a First Round Playoff match-up with Darlington. Unfortunately for DP, we would not see him take the hill on this night. But we didn’t come away empty handed…   The Sharks were hosting Andrews High School, which pitted two teams reeling from the loss of quality players a year ago. And then the run-fest was on! Walks, misplays, wild pitches and swirling winds made for an interesting evening for both clubs, as a typical February scrimmage became a race to beat the incoming rain.   Fast-forward to the reason for the trip, Kelly Wright. He took infield and threw with grace, pitched one inning and yanked a hamstring coming out of the box in his next at bat.  60 Times    Name  Class  60 Time  David Aldridge  Sr  7.46  Derrick Amann  Sr  7.81  Ingram Bell  Sr  7.07  David Causey  Sr  7.91  Kelly Wright  Jr  7.28  Tim McGraw  Jr  9.09  Tyler Servant  Jr  8.22  Ryan Ziegler  Jr  7.59  Brunson Miller  Jr  7.13  Nick Hotzelt  So  7.90  Colby Crooks  So  7.75  Gunnar Heidt  Fr  7.62  Robert Toriano  Fr  8.35  Tanner English  Fr  7.62  Anthony Cossentino  Fr  7.85   Catchers-Pop Time    Name  Class  Pop Time  Ryan Ziegler  Jr  2.12-2.17   Top Outfield Arms   Rank  Name  Class  1  Derrick Amann  Sr  2  Tanner English  Fr  T3  David Aldridge  Sr  T3  Brunson Miller  Jr   Top Infield Arms   Rank  Name  Class  1  Kelly Wright-1B  Jr  2  Colby Crooks  So  3  Gunnar Heidt  Fr  T4  Robert Toriano  Fr  T4  Anthony Cossentino  Fr   Top Infield Actions   Rank  Name  Class  1  Gunnar Heidt  Fr  2  Robert Toriano  Fr  3  Colby Crooks  Fr Pitchers  Name  Class  R/L  FB  BB  CH  David Aldridge  Sr  R  80-81  –  66-67   Derrick Amann  Sr  R  75-79  –  65-66  Kelly Wright  Jr  L  82-83  –  74-75  Anthony Cossentino  Fr  R  74-75  –  61-63 Top Prospects    Rank  Name  Class  Scout Notes  1  Kelly Wright  Jr  Very loose and projectable arm and frame; definite follow in 09 class; plus defender at 1B but future is as a LHP  2  Tanner English  Fr  Stong arm, solid runner and good bat-speed with plenty of physical maturing to come  3  Ryan Ziegler  Jr  Solid arm strength and very accurate behind the dish with every throw; defensive skills are ahead of bat but has passion to play the game  4  David Aldridge  Sr  Another energized and passionate player with some two-way skills at the right school; can play past HS  T5  Gunnar Heidt  Fr  Good swing and likely starter at SS; when he gets stronger, will project better as a 3B  T5  Anthony Cossentino  Fr  Potential two-way player with some arm strength and pop in his bat .

Scout Day 2008: Pickens Blue Flame

By: Nick Nickles-February 11, 2008 First year T.L. Hanna Head Coach Mark Crook brought in DP to run the Yellow Jackets through a DP scout day before a home contest with the Pickens Blue Flame. Pickens head coach Stan Butler’s Blue Flame joined the scout day upon arrival and with the help of the coaches we completed the workout in less than 30 minutes!!! Then, both teams jumped right into the scrimmage, and with both teams being known for stout high school offenses, they didn’t disappoint. Nearly 20 runs were scored in this 8-inning affair and DP stuck around to bring you detailed prospect information on two quality baseball teams. Prospect Info: Pickens Logan Thomas-Sophomore, INF/RHP: Displays a cannon arm across the infield when he scoops up a ball at short. A young exciting high school player that is fun to watch play the game. Thomas (right) is a special player, having played on the varsity since he was in the seventh grade. Thomas would benefit by showing more consistency at the plate. Thomas has the ability to be an all-state performer and should contend for Region Player of the Year with a solid campaign at the plate and on the bump. A definite prospect in the 2010 class. Stephen Wyatt-Unsigned senior, OF: We do know that he can hit a legit fastball. In our last viewing of Pickens last year during the upper state playoff round versus A.C. Flora, he took Logan Munson out to centerfield and also recorded three hits on the day. On his first day out from basketball, he started right where he left off, grabbing two hits. The ball comes of his bat nicely and he just finds a way to hit. All indications are that Wyatt has good grades and a 20+ ACT score.   60 Times  Name  Class  60  Jut Owens  Sr  7.59  Blake Ellenburg  Jr  7.89  Josh Crumpton  Sr  8.46  Tyler Dacus  Sr  8.49  Kendal Ray  Jr  7.28  Brett Finley  Jr  7.66  Logan Thomas  So  7.37  Clay Winstead  Sr  8.69   Reed Kent  Sr  7.45  Will Burgess  Jr  7.62  Cody Bowen  Sr  8.10  Josh Moses  Sr  8.06  Carlin Grant  Jr  7.82  Rae Brazeale  Jr  7.68  Stephen Wyatt  Sr  7.25  Doug Atkins  Jr  7.72  Jacob Batson  Jr  7.97  Jacob Fowler  Jr  7.44  Brandon Looper  Jr  8.10  Aaron Hester  Jr  7.50 Best Outfield Arms  Rank Name Class   1  Jordan Smith   Sr  2  Doug Atkins  Jr  3  Stephen Wyatt  Sr  4  Jacob Fowler  Jr  5  Josh Moses  Sr Best Infield Actions  Rank  Name  Class  1  Logan Thomas  So  2  Kendall Ray  Jr  T3  Will Burgess  Jr  T3  Reed Kent  Sr  5  Clay Winstead  Sr Best Infield Arms  Rank Name Class   1 Logan Thomas   So  2 Kendall Ray   Jr  3 Reed Kent   Sr   4 Will Burgess   Jr  5 Clay Winstead   Sr Catchers Pop Times  Name  Time  Class  Jut Owens  2.15-2.22  Sr  Blake Ellenburg  2.19-2.28  Jr  Pitchers  Name  Class  Fastball  Curveball   Change  Rae Brazeale  Jr  70-73 was effective when down in the zone  56-59  None  Jacob Batson  Jr  74-75 found the middle of the plate too often  65-67  None  Jake Fowler  Jr  78-79  64-67  None  Logan Thomas  So  84-87 has some life, misses bats  70-71 plus breaking pitch at times  None Top Prospects   Rank  Name  Class  Notes  1  Logan Thomas  So  Easy to think he has the best infield arm in the state. Scout Day 2008: T.L. Hanna Yellow Jackets

Prospect Info: T.L. Hanna Brooks Hall-Junior, INF/RHP: Hall (left) is a quality player in the making. He’s still filling out his tall frame, but the ability is starting to shine through on the diamond. Hall had three hits on the night including a deep bomb to left. He’s a bonafide Division I prospect with projectable size, can swing it and has a plus arm. Hall is a definite guy to watch over the next year, a two-way guy where size and an upper-80’s fastball could eventually take the bat out of his hands, but at this point Hall’s bat is ahead of his arm. John Long-Senior, Liberty signee, 3B/RHP: Long is a toolsy player. Long has a stout frame with some punch in his bat, a plus arm across the diamond and is a solid runner for a corner infield spot. If Long can find balls on the sweet spot of his bat consistently, he could be some kind of force at the next level. Jim Toman and the Liberty staff definitely have something to work with in Long’s abilities. Long will have some gaudy junior numbers to replicate this season for the Yellow Jackets. Grayson Brewster-Unsigned senior, P: A taller kid in the 6’2" range with long arms and a fastball in the low-80’s. He could be coached up a little and has some things to work with. He could pay dividends as a project. He was 80-81 and 69-70 with his curveball that had some loop. An interesting guy for Division II schools looking to acquire some depth on the mound. Jaren Sustar-Junior, 3B: A solid high school infielder with a nose for a line drive a game. He produces a lot of hard groundballs and line drives in a contact-type approach at the plate. He should have plenty of chances to drive in runs batting behind Hall and Long in the order this season for Hanna. Jake Long-Sophomore, RHP/INF: Long has some arm strength and the ball comes out of his hand nicely on the bump. He needs to challenge hitters more frequently and get his breaking pitch over for a strike. He caused some of his own problems on this night by not throwing enough strikes, and he really didn’t get hit. He has good stuff and his breaking pitch is legit for a sophomore. He has to grow up in a hurry because he has an opportunity to help this staff if he finds the zone on a consistent basis. Ross Jackson-Senior, Presbyterian signee, OF: He is a solid role player who doesn’t do anything great, but doesn’t do anything to hurt the team. Every baseball team that is going to be successful needs a player like Jackson. He will do what it takes to win, and gives you a shot in all aspects of the game.    60 Times  Name  Class  60  Grayson Brewster  Sr  7.61  Trevor Burrell  Sr  7.81  Garrett Burton  Sr  7.35  Griff Caroseillo  Jr  8.06  Russell Davis  Sr  7.53  Michael Grande  Jr  8.46  Brooks Hall  Jr  7.25  Erich Hellstrom  Jr  7.73  Jeremey Hunter  Sr  Did not run  Ross Jackson  Sr  7.32  Jacob Long  So  8.03  John Long  Sr  7.13  Mcclain Murphy  Jr  7.28  Chase Page  Sr  7.56  Brad Parkins  Sr  7.75  Chase Richey  Jr  Did not run  Dillon Sloan  Jr  7.66  Jaren Sustar  Jr  7.43  Clay Tucker  Jr  7.09 Best OF Arms  Rank  Name  Class  1  Ross Jackson  Sr  2  Russell Davis  Sr  3  Clay Tucker  Jr  4  Dillon Sloan  Jr  5  McClain Murphy  Jr  Best infield Actions  Rank  Name  Class  T1  John Long  Sr  T1  Jaren Sustar  Jr  T3  Jake Long   So  T3  Jeremy Hunter  Sr  5  Garret Burton  Sr Best Infield Arms  Rank  Name  Class  1   John Long   Sr  2  Jaren Sustar  Jr  3  Jake Long  So  4  Jeremey Hunter   Sr  5  Garret Burton  Sr Catcher Pop Time  Name  POP Time  Class  Brad Parkins  2.22-2.25  Sr   Pitchers  Name  Class  Fastball  Curveball  Change  Michael Grande  Jr  78-79 induced groundballs  66-68 slighty above average high school breaking pitch  –  Jake Long  So  80-81 slides away to righties 68-70 Plus curveball at times   –  Griff Caroseillo  Jr  71-75  58  –  Grayson Brewster  Sr  80-81  69-70  –  John Long  Sr  82-84  72-73 Plus curveball throughout his outing, served as an out pitch.  – Top Propsects  Rank  Name  Class  Notes  T1  John Long  Sr  Good arm, ball jumps off bat. Scout Day 2008: Aynor Blue Jackets

By: Austin Alexander-February 9, 2008 New Myrtle Beach Head Coach Tim Christy welcomed Aynor High School and Diamond Prospects into their facility for a Scout Day and scrimmage on Saturday. An absolutely perfect February day pitted two teams 30 minutes apart with a great deal to prove entering the 2008 season. Aynor skipper Chad Sarvis bussed it down Highway 501 with a host of youngsters who have grown up watching Blue Jacket post-season success. Only holdover Will Chandler (left) contributed to Aynor’s previous runs in the past. Sarvis has questions to answer all over the diamond but finds solace in the future of Blue Jacket baseball in the person of eighth grader Hunter Burnett. 60 Times  Name  Class  60 Time  Cameron Flowers  Jr  –  William Carroll  Fr  8.41  Caleb Shelly  Sr  7.22  Joe Brown  Sr  7.78  Chris Daniels  Sr  7.80  Brett Martin  Fr  8.38  Will Johnson  Jr  7.50  Brandon Collins  So  8.15  Wyman Boatwright  Fr  8.10  Hunter Burnett  8th  8.68  William Chandler  Sr  7.00  Matt Grice  Jr  7.80  Peyton Hill  Fr  7.47  Seth Harrelson  Fr  8.59  Garrett Holden  Fr  8.29  David Weiser  Jr  7.28  Daniel Rabon  Sr  7.59  Dennis Lynch  So  7.70  Robert Donavan  Sr  7.75       Catchers-Pop Times  Name  Class  Pop Time  William Carroll  Fr  2.52-2.64  Garrett Holden  Fr  2.67-2.80  Will Chandler  Sr  – Top Outfield Arms Rank  Name  Class  1  Will Johnson  Jr  2  Hunter Burnett  8th  3  Brandon Collins  So Top Infield Arms Rank  Name  Class  1  Joe Brown  Sr  2  Hunter Burnett-1B  8th  3  William Carroll  Fr  4  Wyman Boatwright  Fr  5  Matt Grice  Jr Top Infield Actions Rank  Name  Class  1  Hunter Burnett-1B  8th  2  William Carroll  Fr  3  Wyman Boatwright-1B  Fr  4  Joe Brown  Sr  5  Will Johnson-1B  Jr Pitchers  Name  Class  R/L  Fastball  Breaking Ball  Change-up  Hunter Burnett  8th  L  68-70  –  61-2  Caleb Shelly  Sr  R  72-73  53  –  Chris Daniels  Sr  L  75-76  –  –  Wyman Boatright  Fr  L  63-67  –  –  Peyton Hill  Fr  R  69-70  –  –   Top Prospects  Rank  Name  Class  Scout Notes  1  Will Chandler  Sr  Very good bat-speed and athleticism would make him interesting for college guys; signed this week to play football at Coastal  2  Hunter Burnett  8th  Just moved into the area and will attract attention as his frame fills out; good player now, has an even brighter future; very seasoned mound presence and pitchability  3  Matt Grice  Jr  His bat is the calling card for a guy that plays SS but projects as a LH hitter; very good swing and approach  4  Wyman Boatright  Fr  Another physical jump vaults this kid into a different category; looks the part so far but must get stronger  5  Will Johnson  Jr  A follow for college coaches at this stage; must stay on the ball better to hit improved pitching   .
