-Trojans win pitcher’s battle-

GarnerHogan sign21DP headed over to James Island Wednesday night to catch a glimpse of two playoff bound teams, and a very intriguing pitching matchup. Bishop England’s stud pitcher Daniel Brooks started for the Bishops, and as expected brought his usual crowd of pro scouts with him. James Island would counter with a horse of their own in Hogan Garner (right). It was a great night for baseball on The Island and DP was greeted with a very competitive contest.

The first four innings absolutely flew by! Both pitchers were in control and both defenses were locked in. Bishop England would strike first in the 5th inning with one run. Campbell Brusman reached on a leadoff walk and came around to score on Quinn DeWitt’s clutch two-out hit down the first base line.

James Island immediately responded to take the lead in their half of the inning. Ayrton Leichner and Keillor Osbon both walked to get things started and came around to score on an infield hit by Russ Patterson and a wild pitch. James Island would extend the lead to 4-1 in the sixth thanks to an impressive homerun off the bat of shortstop Julius Reynolds. The Bishops attempted a rally in the seventh, but tonight belonged to Garner as he pitched a complete game to give the Trojans a 4-1 victory.

Final: James Island 4 Bishop England 1; WP: Hogan Garner (7 IP, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K) LP: Daniel Brooks (6 IP, 4 ER, 4 BB, 6K)

-Prospect Info-

BrooksDaniel sign21Daniel Brooks, 2021, Bishop England, College of Charleston, P/1B: There is SO much to love about Mr. Brooks! This night was not his best outing, but he was still extremely good and difficult to handle. Why is it so difficult? Because his fastball ranged from 88-93 MPH from a guy that is 6’8! However, Brooks really struggled to find his curveball (70-74 MPH). To his credit, he worked hard in his warm-up pitches to find it. He also mixed in a few changeups (84-85) to show off his arsenal and I also assume because of the curveball command issues. James Island got to him in the fifth and sixth inning as he labored with fastball command as well. Four free bases in those decisive innings ultimately was the downfall for Brooks and the Bishops. Brooks is one of South Carolina’s top prospects and the towering righty has a tremendous future ahead of him. {VIDEO}

LogginsChase stance21Chase Loggins, 2021, Bishop England,The Citadel, OF/P: Great looking athlete for the Bishops who will be taking his talents to The Citadel next year. Very good two-way player. Battling an arm issue, so that has hurt the Bishops not having him on the mound this year. Hits in the three-hole for the Bishops from the right side and fills up the box! Had three quality at bats on the night. Was hit by a pitch in the first inning, smoked a single to right field in the fourth, and reached on an error in the sixth that was hit hard. Athletic ballplayer that will have a legitimate chance to pitch and hit at the next level.

GarnerHogan pg19Hogan Garner - 2022, James Island HS, Clemson, C/RHP: Hogan Garner got the start tonight for the Trojans on the mound. Garner who has a big arm is known more for his catching ability. However, Garner has put together a really nice year on the mound for James Island. Velocity was down a little bit tonight from previous viewings, as Garner pitched at 81-85 MPH. Last week Velocity was up to 88. Garner has a solid two-pitch mix. His breaking ball (69-71 CB) has really improved and he has a lot of confidence in it. Garner Is a strike-thrower and does a nice job of holding the running game which gives the Trojans a chance to win every time out. {VIDEO}

ReynoldJulius hs21Julius Reynolds - 2021, James Island HS, Florence-Darlington Tech, SS: Reynolds delivered the biggest hit of the night with a towering six inning home run (VIDEO) to give the Trojans a little breathing room. Reynolds saw plenty of action at shortstop last night (7 ground balls) and he checks all the boxes for me. It was like he was at a showcase on defense (minus the backhand) as he had a couple routine balls hit directly to him, one hard to his forehand, and a few slow rollers. Arm strength is not an issue either. Good overall player and baseball IQ that I see staying at shortstop or moving to third base in college.

LeichnerAyrton hs21Ayrton Leichner - 2021, James Island HS, Coker, OF: Leichner played a very good game and has put together a very good senior year for the Trojans. Had three quality at bats versus Brooks. Turned on a 92 MPH fastball for a single in his first at bat, and had two hard earned walks as well. Stole two bases and scored one run. Versatile player that can play any position on the field. Arm strength is a plus from the outfield and have seen Leichner up to 88 MPH on the mound.

-Notable Performers-

Quinn DeWitt, 2021, Bishop England, Uncommitted, OF: 1-for-4, RBI, 3 hard hit balls, runs well from the left side.

Elliott Sanders, 2022, Bishop England, Uncommitted, C/SS: 1-for-3, versatile athlete that catches and plays middle infield.

Chase Worrill, 2021, James Island, Limestone, 3B/DH: 1-for-3, BFH, robbed of another hit in first.
