BarrysBytes-logo2"Over the past five years I have been trying to figure out a way to see every high school team in my area during the spring season. Unfortunately, I have been unsuccessful. Every year I seem to leave out a handful of schools which in essence, I am missing out on a large amount of players. I feel my job is to identify next level talent and relay it over to college/profesqqsional scouts so they can do their jobs. A collection of us have brainstormed and have come up with a way for me to try and lay eyes on as many players as possible, hence the introduction of "Barry's Bytes". This will be a blog that I will update daily/bi-daily for our subscribers. I will be bouncing around various high schools and instead of covering games; I will be on a talent search. The goal is to hit multiple spots on a given night. In this blog you will find everything from prospect info to my personal thoughts on an array of topics ranging from standout concession stands and peak performers to the most polite gate attendants and umpire gaffes, also any random thought that crosses through my brain will be fair game! Have an open mind and hope you guys enjoy my two cents. See you at the park!"

Northwestern vs Rock Hill & Fort Mill vs Nation Ford

-Rock Hill at Northwestern & Nation Ford at Fort Mill-

Netzer-Brett-baseDP finally got the opportunity to get up to the Northeast part of the state tonight. Previous plans to cover this area this spring always got cancelled due to inclement weather but there wasn’t a cloud in the sky on this night! Two stops were on the docket with game times closer together than desired but we just play with the hand that is dealt on a given night. Established players continued to solitify their status and some unknown names burst onto the scene.

Fluor Field: Wade Hampton vs Byrnes

Flour Field 3-Fluor Field: Wade Hampton vs Byrnes-

One of the better HS games I have seen this year took place tonight at Fluor Field between Byrnes Rebels and Wade Hampton Generals. Both teams are battling to get into the playoffs which produced an intense atmosphere with about 1,500 fans in attendance. This affair brought a little bit of everything to the table: homerun, two upper-80's arms, multiple doubles, inside-the-park homerun and a walk-off to end things!

Carolina Classic

-Carolina Classic-

Mitchell-Graham-stanceThe 2014 Carolina Classic kicked off Monday at Eastside HS featuring the following eight teams: Riverside, Blue Ridge, Wade Hampton, Greer, Powdersville, Laurens, Travelers Rest and Eastside. Rain has saturated the area over the past two days limiting action but blue skies gave DP a great opportunity to post up on all four games today even though temperatures weren’t ideal. Very rare do you see three games in a row that end almost the same but High School baseball can be head scratching more often than not.

Yelton JimmyDP opened the door to Region I-2A baseball this evening at Chesnee High School where the Eagles hosted the Powdersville Patriots. Chesnee is the reigning 2A State Champions and look to repeat, possessing an undefeated record on the season so far. Powdersville comes in with hopes of upsetting the Eagles to put them in a better playoff position.

A Coach's Farewell

-A Coach’s Farewell-

Scolamiero-Clark and SteveTonight was a special night for baseball at Greenville HS. Not only did they recognize their departing senior class but also they honored Head Coach Steve Scolamiero who is retiring after 22 years. For those that have gotten the opportunity to get to know not only this great teacher of the game, but also a great teacher of life, I can say he is one that will be greatly missed. (Left, embracing his son Clark)

Steve Sanders Tournament

  • Written by Barry Mabry

Dunleavy-David-3The Spartanburg County Steve Sanders Tournament kicked off this past Saturday and DP planned on posting up at multiple sites over the course of three days to ensure seeing all ten teams. Unfortunately, Mother Nature banged Monday’s games so we were unable to lay eyes on Chesnee and Byrnes. This is the second year that the tournament has been held during Spring Break as for it used to be played as a pre-season tournament. The tourney is named after Steve Sanders who was a well-known sports writer for the Herald-Journal for 25 years, was the original organizer of this annual event and left us unexpectedly in 1995.

St. Joseph's at Southside Christian

  • Written by Barry Mabry

Stamler-Ryan-releaseDP dipped into class I A baseball tonight as Southside Christian hosted two-time reigning state champions St. Joseph’s Knights. Two future Citadel Cadets were slated to go up against one another which sparked even more interest. All four arms that threw tonight project to be pretty good, not to mention I might have found a diamond in the rough.

Eastside at Greenville

  • Written by Barry Mabry

Scolamiero-Clark-setA solid region matchup between two teams that are tied for first in Region II-AAA got my attention tonight and there were a handful of prospects on display. Greenville Red Raiders (on paper) may have the most talented team in 3A baseball this season and Eastside, even losing key seniors last year, still have a couple of prospects themselves. Another beautiful night for baseball to be played!
