Double Dip at St. Joseph’s

EstesMark-catch14

EstesMark-catch14With weather cooperating thus far and twenty-one games being played in three days, DP got the opportunity to lay eyes on 14 teams this week and 190+ baseball players. Tonight, in the upstate, St. Joseph’s Catholic School caught my attention with a double header on the slate.

Southside Christian took care of business in Game One winning 12-0 over the pups of Christ Church. Game Two featured some upperclassman as St. Joseph’s hosted Woodmont. This was a close affair until late when Woodmont pulled a head to win 7-2.

DP Note: A special thanks to St. Joseph’s new HC George Turmon and his supporting staff for their continuous effort in providing and preparing their field giving multiple teams an opportunity to play this fall.

EstesMark-stance14Mark Estes – 2016, St. Joseph’s HS, Uncommitted, C: Estes has bought his time having to wait for David Marable to graduate. Now it is his job and tonight he looked like he is gonna be ready. Strong sturdy body kid at 6-1/200 Estes receives well, blocks, and plays with energy. Pop times ranged 2.19-2.30 but arm strength is present; needs some mechanical work. Swinging the stick Estes brings a balanced approach with some pop. He smoked a HR tonight then sat back on a breaking ball and centered that up as well. A good comparison would be Seth Wall who is at SMC right now.

Sterling Turmon – 2016, Eastside HS, Uncommitted, OF/RHP: Turmon is a great looking athletic 6-4/180 outfielder. Tools are present. Kid can run, has an above average arm from CF, possesses a projectable frame, and is a left-handed stick. As a scout he is very noticeable when you step in the ballpark. I say this a lot but there is a big difference in an athlete that has tools and a baseball player that has tools. I believe Turmon is caught right in the middle (which isn’t a bad spot) and if he ever turns the page, he could be a huge impact player. I want to see him on the bump and see if OF arm translates.

HughesBradley-set14Bradley Hughes – 2017, Christ Church HS, Uncommitted, RHP: Hughes was Jekyll and Hyde in his outing today but having said that, there is something here to follow. 6-3/170 athletic frame, free delivery, controlled mechanics, clean arm, and works quickly. Hughes has a solid mound presence and even when some things weren’t going his way, you never could tell. FB sat 79-81 (topped 82), CB 67-68, and CH 70-73. A velocity jump will happen. His frame and delivery sets him up to become a prospect. Getting physically stronger is the next step of development.

Cam Wilson – 2016, Southside Christian, Uncommitted, C: Wilson was a joy to pay attention to. Don’t let the undersized catcher fool you though b/c he has a short and quick trigger (2.08 in game). Wilson does everything you like your catchers to do. One thing that stood out was I always saw a smile on his face. Wilson just seems like he enjoys being on the field. Defense trumps offense but I believe there is something to follow. There is a spot for players like this.

Hunter King – 2017, Woodmont HS, Uncommitted, 2B/3B: King caught my eye the other night at Conastee and I got the chance to bear down on him a little more tonight. Another kid that seems to enjoy playing the game. King possesses some solid infield actions and looks like he has some baseball IQ at a young age. He made a backhanded play up the middle from his 2B position look easy. Bat looks like it might play in the future and frame checks out for right now. Good to find this kid and look forward to seeing how much he works to improve his game over the next couple years.

Sean McDermott – 2015, St. Joseph’s HS, Uncommitted, MIF/3B/OF: I have always liked McDermott but just been waiting for the game to slow down for him. Now it looks like it has and boy he looked comfortable playing SS tonight. McDermott is lean framed (6-2/170) left-handed hitting MIF/3B/OF. I believe OF or 3B is what he will eventually develop into but what I saw tonight, he can play SS at the HS level. Not sure what he is looking for college-wise but with that lean frame, being a LHH, and showing the ability to make effortless plays; there is a college that takes guys like this. Not a bad runner either.
